MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - About 20 percent of the U.S. population is addicted to prescription painkillers, and that number is climbing as more people use the drugs to deal with chronic or acute pain, a new study showed on Tuesday.
The researchers, led by Laura Narciso at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, found that in 2007, the number of Americans with addiction to prescription painkillers was about 2.4 million.
By 2013, the estimated number of Americans suffering from prescription painkiller addiction had climbed to more than 3.7 million, an increase of 23 percent, the study showed.
By comparison, the number of U.S. residents who were addicted to heroin increased by about 25 percent, from 1.5 million in 2007 to 1.8 million in 2013.
The findings showed a marked increase in the prevalence of prescription opioid addiction in the United States, and the authors urged doctors and pharmacists to use a proven screening tool that could lead to earlier identification and treatment for this group.
"It's a huge problem," Narciso said in a telephone interview.
She and her colleagues used data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health to estimate the prevalence of addiction to prescription painkillers in 2007 and 2013. They looked at people aged 12 and older and asked them questions about whether they used prescription painkillers and if they were addicted to the drugs.
The researchers' findings were published online ahead of print in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
The frequency of opioid use in the United States has climbed, with many patients in pain resorting to stronger and potentially more harmful prescription painkillers.
"More than half of those people who have become addicted to prescription painkillers were prescribed painkillers by a doctor or dentist," Narciso said.
The researchers also found that about 7 percent of people addicted to prescription painkillers got the drugs from a friend or relative, and about 3 percent said they got the drugs from a drug dealer.
More than 40 percent of people who were addicted to prescription painkillers also were addicted to alcohol.
